Our dentists always do their best to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible. We offer inlays and onlays to treat mild to moderate tooth decay, as well as repair cracked teeth.
While a dental crown covers the entire visible portion of your tooth above the gum line, a dental inlay or onlay only restores the part of the tooth that’s decayed or cracked.
Benefits of Inlays & Onlays
Inlays and onlays are a great compromise between fillings and dental crowns. If the damage to your tooth is too severe for a filling, our dentists may recommend a dental inlay or onlay. Inlays and onlays are sometimes called “indirect fillings” because they’re made in an off-site lab as opposed to being directly molded onto your teeth.
During your first appointment, your dentist will remove only what tooth structure is damaged. Next, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth to send to the lab. To protect your tooth while your dental inlay or onlay is being made, we’ll place a temporary cover. When you return to our office, your dental inlay or onlay will be ready.
Inlays and onlays look like the rest of your tooth, making them virtually undetectable. Inlays are best for smaller restorations, while onlays are ideal for larger ones. Our dentists save as much natural tooth structure as possible so your smile stays strong and healthy.
